Understanding Oily Skin

The oil your skin produces is essential for keeping it healthy and hydrated. However, when your glands make too much sebum, it can lead to clogged pores, blackheads, and acne.

Common signs of oily skin include:

  • A shiny or greasy appearance

  • Enlarged or visible pores

  • Blackheads and clogged pores

  • Occasional or frequent breakouts

Oily skin can also affect how makeup wears, sometimes causing it to slide off or appear uneven. That’s why it’s best to use products specifically formulated for oily skin.

Several factors can cause oily skin — for some people, it’s genetic; for others, it may be due to hormonal changes, certain medications or health conditions, or even diet.

Having oily skin isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, natural oils help protect and preserve your skin, and people with oily skin often have thicker skin and fewer wrinkles. The key is finding the right balance between controlling excess oil and maintaining your skin’s natural moisture.

Oily Skin Care: What to Do and What to Avoid

Managing oily skin is all about balance. keeping your skin clean, hydrated, and protected without stripping away its natural moisture. Here are some simple tips to help control excess oil and maintain healthy skin:

✅ DO:

  • Wash your face every morning, evening, and after exercise.

  • Choose skincare products labeled “oil free” and “non comedogenic.”

  • Use a gentle, foaming cleanser to remove dirt and excess oil.

  • Apply a light, oil free moisturizer daily.

  • Wear sunscreen every day, especially outdoors.

  • Opt for oil-free, water-based makeup.

❌ DON’T:

  • Use oil-based or alcohol-based cleansers, as they can irritate or dry out the skin.

  • Sleep with your makeup on.

  • Touch your face throughout the day.

It’s also important to note that oily skin is common among people with melanin-rich skin, who may be more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and keloid scarring.

When managing breakouts, avoid picking or squeezing pimples, as this can lead to dark spots or scarring. Instead, use gentle, non-stripping skincare products to control oil and soothe irritation.
