Dry Skin

Dry skin occurs when the skin loses or cannot retain enough moisture.

Caring for Your Skin in Cold, Dry Weather

This is often caused by frequent bathing, the use of harsh soaps, aging, or certain medical conditions. Living in a colder climate can also contribute, as cold, dry winter air strips moisture from the skin.

During the winter months in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s common for skin especially on the hands to become red, rough, raw, and itchy. To learn more about caring for your skin and body during the colder months, check out Beauty Nina’s guide to cosmetics essentials for every season.

6 Simple Ways to Pamper Dry Skin

  1. Moisturize Right After Washing: Apply a moisturizer immediately after washing to lock in hydration.

  2. Opt for Creams or Ointments: These are more effective than lotions at keeping skin soft and hydrated.

  3. Stick to Gentle Skincare Products: Avoid harsh soaps or products that can irritate your skin.

  4. Choose Non-Irritating Fabrics and Detergents: Soft clothing and mild laundry detergents help prevent further dryness.

  5. Add Moisture to the Air: Use a humidifier to combat dry indoor air.

  6. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to support skin health from the inside out.

Caring for Dry Skin Across All Skin Tones

Dry skin can affect people differently depending on skin tone. For those with fair or light skin, dryness often makes redness and irritation more visible, and can increase susceptibility to conditions like rosacea. For individuals with melanin-rich skin, dryness may appear as a greyish or “ashy” tone, often caused by transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

When caring for melanin-rich dry skin, focus on ingredients that protect the skin’s natural barrier and lock in moisture. Effective options include urea, jojoba oil, sunflower oil, olive oil, coconut oil, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and shea butter.

Regular, gentle exfoliation is also important to remove the layer of dry, dead skin cells and reveal more radiant skin beneath. Avoid harsh scrubs, which can create micro-tears and worsen irritation.

For all skin types—light and dark—it’s best to avoid alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and retinoids when your skin is dry. These ingredients can interfere with your skin’s natural ability to restore oils and maintain moisture.
